学校办学始于著名爱国华侨领袖陈嘉庚先生1920年创办的集美学校水产科，为我国早培养水产航海技术人才的摇篮之一。在百年的办学历程中，学校以“诚毅”为校训，弘扬嘉庚精神，为国家和福建海洋产业发展培养了大量高素质的技术技能人才，优秀校友遍及全国各地和世界五洲，在海内外享有广泛声誉。2000年4月，时任福建省省长的习近平总书记为学校八十周年校庆题词“春风化雨，桃李满园”，对学校的建设和发展寄予厚望。

StartingfromtheFisheriesDepartmentofJimeiSchoolfoundedbyMr.ChenJiageng,afamouspatrioticoverseasChineseleader,in1920,theCollegeisoneofthecradlesfortrainingaquaticnavigationtechniciansinChina.Inthe100-yearcourseofrunningtheschool,theCollegehastakensincerityandpersistenceasitsmotto,carriedforwardthespiritofJiageng,andtrainedalargenumberofhigh-qualitytechnicalandskilledpersonnelforthedevelopmentoftheoceanindustryinFujianandthewholecountry,withoutstandingalumnispreadingalloverthecountryandfivecontinentsintheworld,enjoyingawidereputationathomeandabroad.InApril2000,GeneralSecretaryXiJinping,whenhewasgovernorofFujianProvince,wroteaninscriptionforthe80thanniversaryoftheschool-ChunFengHuaYu,TaoLiManYuan,placinghighhopesontheconstructionanddevelopmentofthecollege. 学校现有思明和翔安两个校区，占地712亩，总规划占地面积1000余亩，设置有航海学院、海洋生物学院、海洋机电学院、信息工程学院、国际商贸学院、海洋文化与旅游学院、海洋工程学院、公共教育学院、马克思主义学院、学院等10个二级学院，在校学生1.2万人，非学历教育学生每年2万多人次。现有专兼职教师639人，其中副高职称以上占比达39%，“双师素质”教师占专任教师比例超过80%。拥有省级教学团队“水产养殖技术专业团队”，全国优秀教师1名、省级教学名师1名，省级专业带头人13名，农业职业教育教学名师7名。建有大型船舶操纵模拟器等校内实训室及各种仿真实训室166个、校外实习实训基地253个。其中，中央财政支持的实训基地3个，省级财政支持的实训基地12个。共配置教学仪器设备总值8855万元，馆藏图书54.43万册、电子图书55万种。
